Attributes & Dice
The five core attributes, the dice and bonuses that drive every roll, the bonus caps, and what Focus governs.
Every character in ØMEN: After Dragons is defined by five core attributes: Strength, Agility, Resolve, Focus, and Intelligence. Each attribute pairs a Die that you roll for checks, attacks, and saves with a flat Bonus that you add to those rolls. Understanding how the dice step up, how bonuses scale and cap, and which attribute powers which part of play is the foundation of every build.
The Five Attributes
| Abbr. | Name | Primary Roles |
|---|---|---|
| STR | Strength | Melee attacks, Athletics, carrying, intimidation |
| AGI | Agility | Ranged attacks, Acrobatics, Dodge, Stealth |
| RES | Resolve | HP pool, toughness, physical saves |
| FCS | Focus | Perception, attack accuracy, WP pool (partial) |
| INT | Intelligence | Spellcasting, knowledge skills, WP pool (primary) |
Each attribute has two parts:
- A Die - D4, D6, D8, D10, or D12 - rolled for checks, attacks, and saves.
- A Bonus - an integer added flat to any roll involving that attribute.
Dice Step Progression
The dice climb in fixed steps:
D4 → D6 → D8 → D10 → D12
Each step raises your average roll by +2.
In play you roll your class dice, not your racial dice. Racial bonus dice exist only to set your starting bonuses if you choose to roll at character creation; they never become your in-play dice.
Bonus Scaling and Caps
At Level 1, each attribute's bonus is capped by your race - these Level 1 caps appear in the racial tables. From Level 2 onward, every bonus cap becomes 20. Items and a small number of specialization picks can temporarily or permanently exceed 20, but the soft cap is 20 across the board.
Reaching the +20 cap on even a single bonus is a deliberate build commitment. By Level 10, a character with a typical SP budget usually lands with core bonuses in the +10 to +14 range rather than near the cap.
Core Attributes and the Discount
Each class designates two Core Attributes. Raising the bonus of a core attribute costs 5 SP less than normal, with a floor of 1 SP. In practice, core bonuses cost just 1 SP to raise until they pass +7, at which point the normal cost curve catches up.
This discount applies from character creation onward - it is built into every SP spend involving those two attributes, including the initial 30 SP.
| Attribute Type | Cost to Raise Bonus by +1 |
|---|---|
| Non-core | Cost = current bonus |
| Core | Cost = current bonus − 5 (minimum 1 SP) |
What Focus (FCS) Governs
Focus is the attribute that ties together precision, awareness, and willpower:
- Perception checks.
- Attack accuracy. Every basic attack rolls an FCS die alongside the primary attack die, and FCS bonus is added to the hit roll.
- A partial contribution to your Will Point (WP) pool - WP gains +2 per point of FCS bonus, on top of Intelligence's primary contribution. (See Will Points below.)
A few classes lean on Focus in special ways. A Priest's Divine Conduit lets them use FCS instead of INT when casting Divine spells - for hit, damage, and Save DCs - while all other spell schools still require INT.
FCS Degradation on Multi-Attack
When a character makes multiple attacks in a sequence, the Focus contribution degrades:
- Attack 1: full FCS bonus.
- Attack 2: half FCS bonus.
- Attack 3 and beyond: no FCS bonus.
The sequence resets at the start and end of the turn. This is a combat rule rather than a creation rule, but it shapes how martial builds scale.
Derived Pools: HP and WP
Your Health and Will Points are derived from your attributes after all bonus adjustments are final. In both formulas, "die" means the die size number - a D6 counts as 6, a D8 as 8, a D10 as 10.
Health Points
HP = (4 × level) + (RES die × RES bonus)
- Every level-up: +4 HP.
- Every RES bonus increase: +RES die HP.
- Every RES die step-up (e.g., D6 → D8): +2 × RES bonus HP.
Will Points
WP = (4 × level) + (INT die × INT bonus) + (2 × FCS bonus)
- Every level-up: +4 WP.
- Every INT bonus increase: +INT die WP.
- Every INT die step-up: +2 × INT bonus WP.
- Every FCS bonus increase: +2 WP.
