The Halfling Cultures
The Halflings of Scalea form two distinct chiefdoms - coastal Wakestride in the west and agricultural Hucklefoot in the east - separated by the Central Mountains but bound by shared ancestry and culture.
The Halflings of Scalea split into two distinct chiefdoms separated by the Central Mountains, sharing ancestry but increasingly diverging in lifestyle. Both are surprisingly resilient peoples - small in stature (eighty to one hundred twenty centimeters), stocky from love of food, but nimble enough to thrive in worlds built for larger folk. Their famous "Stoutling Spirit" lets them reroll fate once a day, and they always carry food, just in case. Their architecture features 1.5-meter ceilings, requiring "visitor centers" - converted larger buildings - for any big-folk diplomats or traders.
Wakestride (Western, Coastal)
The Wakestride Dominion stretches across most of Scalea's western shores (excluding human-claimed coasts), built on maritime excellence. Their fleet of ships, navigators-for-hire, and pearl-divers serve every coastal nation. Chief Rorie Ruddacle's recent push for expansion has opened new trade routes to Baratea, the Island Dwarves, and even the Storm Spires - earning him both popular support and conservative concern. The Wakestride consider themselves sophisticated cosmopolitans who've seen the wider world, dismissing their eastern cousins as "hillbillies" with affection.
- Government: Elected Chief (7-year terms, must have sailed beyond sight of land)
- Chief: Rorie Ruddacle (67, former merchant captain, progressive, expanding trade)
- Capital: Saltclef (~3.5k)
- Territory: Most western shores (excluding human domains), minor overlaps with Centauros/Feliie (shared land)
- Economy: Ship services, fish, pearls, navigation - NEW routes to Baratea, Island Dwarves, Storm Spires
- Character: Maritime excellence, worldly, "sophisticated," progressive minority worried about expansion
- View of Hucklefoot: "Hillbillies" (affectionate)
Hucklefoot (Eastern, Agricultural)
The Hucklefoot Dominion occupies the foothills east of the Central Mountains, around the Eyes of Scalea lake system. Where Wakestride embraces the world, Hucklefoot embraces home. Their premium crops, specialty foods, and especially their pipe-weed reach the wider world through Bjurhem dwarven intermediaries - never directly. Chief Gunnrid Springbale advocates conservative isolationism while ironically maintaining close personal ties to her Wakestride relatives. The Hucklefoot dismiss their western cousins as "pompous" while quietly admiring their bravery.
- Government: Elected Chief (5-year terms, harvest vote, must own/work land)
- Chief: Gunnrid Springbale (58, conservative isolationist, conflict resolver)
- Capital: Mayfeld (~4k)
- Territory: East of Central Mountains, foothills around Eyes of Scalea
- Economy: Premium crops, specialty foods, pipe-weed, textiles, honey - trade through Bjurhem dwarf intermediaries
- Character: Traditional, self-sufficient, "outsiders bring pain," tight-knit
- Contradiction: Gunnrid's aunt married Wakestride, half her cousins are Wakestride (personal ties vs political stance)
- View of Wakestride: "Pompous" (affectionate)
