The Elven Kingdoms
The three surviving branches of elvenkind - the declining traditionalists of Feliie, the thriving progressives of Hellach, and the forgotten Underworld Elves of the deep.
Elvenkind survives in three branches, each on a different trajectory. Feliie, the Fey Spirit elves, are the oldest of the surviving kingdoms, in slow and mysterious decline as their lifespans shorten generation by generation. Hellach, the Heartwood, is the southernmost and most progressive, embracing adaptation and actually lengthening its lifespans. The Underworld Elves are the forgotten branch, those who fled beneath the surface during the ancient civil wars and never returned, now living as pragmatic libertarians across a loose underground Concord.
Feliie (Fey Spirit)
Feliie is the oldest of the surviving elven kingdoms, a realm of ancient traditions and sacred groves nestled in the central forests north of the Southern Plains. Once a proud civilization that helped drive the dwarves from Durnholde, the Fey Spirit elves now find themselves in slow, mysterious decline - their lifespans shortening generation by generation while they desperately seek external causes for what is, in truth, a spiritual rot born of their own hatred and isolation. The Council of Twelve's consensus-based governance reflects their philosophical paralysis: unable to agree, unable to adapt, they cling to traditions while their cousins in Hellach thrive. Tensions with humans grow as expansion approaches their sacred sites, and the generational divide between isolationist elders and engagement-seeking youth threatens to fracture the kingdom further.
- Government: Council of Twelve (consensus required - causes paralysis)
- Grand Elder: Aeris the Timekeeper of Felirost (847 - impossibly old by current standards)
- Capital: Felirost
- Lifespan: 600–720 years (DECLINING from 750–800 - spiritual rot from hatred/isolation, they don't know why)
- Character: Traditionalist, isolationist, generational divide (young want engagement, elders want isolation)
- Key Events: Grove of First Light incident (killed 3 Tanians 5 years ago)
- Settlements: Need mapping beyond Felirost
Council Members
Grove Speaker, Forest Warden (Sylvara the Moonblade), Starwatcher, Rootkeeper (Theron the Rootspeaker), Songweaver, Wildwalker, Moonblade, Dewmender, Tidekeeper, Crystalcarver, Shadowseer (Miren the Dawnseeker).
Hellach (Heartwood)
Hellach is the southernmost and most progressive of the elven kingdoms, occupying vast forests between Feliie to the north and the Eyes of Scalea to the south. Where Feliie clings to the past, Heartwood embraces adaptation - their masters of Guided Growth shape living architecture from ironbark trees, their cities welcome non-elf residents, and their Council of Nine actually makes decisions. They alone among the elven branches hold the rare Forest Whisperers, individuals who spend centuries attuning to nature itself. Heartwood thrives precisely because they release grudges, their lifespans actually lengthening while Feliie's shorten. Their current crisis is twofold: the escalating Green Fist incursions devastating their southeastern forests, and the contentious debate over whether to fell sacred ironbarks to build ships and finally connect with the wider world by sea.
- Government: Council of Nine (majority vote - functional)
- Grand Elder: Sylvan the Shaper of Verdanthrone (492 - young, controversial election 34 years ago)
- Capital: Verdanthrone (entirely Guided Growth, 10–15% non-elf)
- Lifespan: 700–800 years (THRIVING - longest lived, because they let go of grudges)
- Council Members: Thalion the Rootweaver (634), Mirael the Leafblade (521), Kestrel the Songshaper (389)
- Special Abilities: Guided Growth (bend ironbarks only), Forest Whisperers (3 centuries to master)
- Character: Progressive, adaptive, open to trade/cultural exchange
- Crisis: Green Fist escalating (poaching, logging), Ship debate (Sylvan supports, divisive)
- Key Relations: Sympathetic to Underworld Elves, frustrated with Feliie, tense but beneficial trade with Bjurhem
- Mentioned Settlements: Verdanthrone, Deepgrove, Borderwatch, Tradewind - need detail
Underworld Elves
The Underworld Elves are the forgotten branch of elvenkind, those who fled beneath the surface during the ancient civil wars and never returned. Their settlements form a loose Concord across the underground realms - free movement, shared defense, no central authority. After millennia in the depths, the lingering influence of the qualgoths (which they don't consciously understand) has transformed them: they embrace pleasure and sensation, hold few grudges, and judge no being by ancestry alone. They are pragmatic libertarians, hedonistic curators of life's experiences, who carry the deep regret of the dwarven war their ancestors started yet refuse to dwell in shame. Their four life-cycle sects (Birth, Healing, Suffering, Death) reflect a philosophy that embraces all aspects of existence. Prophetic dreams plague their dreamers, glimpses of past and future that together would form Scalea's complete timeline - if anyone could ever collect them all.
- Government: EU-style Concord, Deep Summit (annual), no central authority
- Philosophy: "We all look the same in darkness" - pragmatic libertarians, hedonistic, curious
- Lifespan: 500–600 years (stable)
- Special Traits: Prophetic dreams (common, varying clarity), embraced dark magic
- Trade Goods: Crystals (pure magical essence), underworld crops/plants, alchemical components
- Key Relations: Close to Island Dwarves (philosophies align), Heydr (dark magic trade), regret Durnholde destruction, grudge against Feliie
