The Dragonkin
The humanoid descendants of seven ancient dragons, organized into the Seven Cities of Scales and governed by the unanimous Council of Seven, who serve as Scalea's mediators, scholars, and neutral arbiters.
The Dragonkin are the children of the seven ancient dragons who departed Scalea millennia ago, humanoid descendants who inherited fragments of their progenitors' magic and traits. Organized into seven city-states scattered across the continent, they serve as Scalea's mediators, scholars, and neutral arbiters - their unanimous Council of Seven governs only their own affairs, but their influence shapes politics throughout the world. Each city reflects the heritage of its patron dragon: Embros burns with fire, Glaxon endures in ice, Veridia grows with nature, Swaerie distills from poison, Chronomere bends time, Anima dreams of mind, and Mithra holds the arcane center.
The Council of Seven
- Governance: Unanimous vote for major decisions, monthly congregation in Mithra, portal network (dragongates)
- Succession Tradition: Guardian presents candidate, city votes for alternative, council votes between the two
- Current Crisis: Mithra protector died 3 months ago without naming a candidate - open race

Mithra (Aion / Arcane) - Crisis City
Mithra is the arcane heart of dragonkin civilization, neutral capital and meeting ground for the Council of Seven. Home to the Aethenum of Scales - the largest library in Scalea, repository of dragonkin secrets and the most complete recorded history of the world - Mithra serves as both academic center and political nexus. The portal network connecting all dragonkin cities terminates here, making it the literal crossroads of dragonkin existence. The recent death of its City Protector without a named successor has plunged the entire dragonkin polity into an unprecedented three-month emergency session, with three candidates and shifting alliances threatening to deadlock the unanimous-vote council indefinitely.
- Status: Vacant protector, emergency session 3 months ongoing
- Feature: Aethenum of Scales (largest library), neutral capital, portal hub
Three Candidates
- Ignis of the Fire (142, aggressive reformist) - backed by Pyrrus
- Harmonia of Many Scales (389, moderate diplomat) - backed by Verdan
- Cipher of the Arcane (456, traditionalist scholar) - backed by Bhail, Aeon, (Mentis publicly)
Embros (Sultra / Fire)
Embros sits on Penance Island in the eastern waters, a city built inside a massive caldera bay on an island shaped by volcanic violence. The horizon burns red most evenings from constant minor eruptions, and the land itself can kill the careless - which is precisely why Embros embraces it. Fire dragonkin and the fortune-seekers who joined them after the Reformer's edict became some of the wealthiest people in Scalea by accepting risks others would not. The city does not rescue those who wander into danger; the dangerous is part of the bargain. Mining operations across the island generate the export taxes that fund Embros' growing influence, while the city itself spills out of the caldera onto the rim and into satellite towns.
- City Protector: Pyrrus of the Fire (487 - impossibly old for Fire, dormant Temporus heritage)
- Location: Penance Island (volcanic, dangerous), caldera bay
- Population: ~70% dragonkin in city, satellites more mixed
- Economy: 10% export tax on mining (metals, minerals, gems, volcanic materials)
- Character: Risk-takers, embrace danger, "land might kill you," no state rescues
- History: Grinok The Reformer opened borders to outsiders, now wealthy
- Satellite: City of Domaec (north), various towns
Glaxon (Glacius / Ice)
Glaxon stands at the cold northeastern edge of the continent, within Bjurhem territory but predating dwarven presence by ages. The city exists for one fundamental purpose: to guard the literal mountain of draconic ice left behind by Glacius, the patron dragon. This magical ice never melts, serves as a key ingredient in the most powerful potions known, and grants status to any wealthy enough to possess a piece. A few kilograms traded annually sustain the entire city of twenty thousand. Three-quarters of Glaxon belongs exclusively to dragonkin, where draconic ice architecture creates conditions inhospitable to others. The remaining quarter accommodates outsider scholars, traders, and craftspeople drawn by the alchemy traditions and cold magic specializations of the deliberate, methodical residents.
- City Protector: Bhail of the Frost (624, oldest protector, genetically lucky)
- Location: Northeastern Scalea within Bjurhem territory (predates dwarves)
- Population: 20k, 75% dragonkin-only district (draconic ice architecture)
- Economy: Draconic ice trade (few kg/year, extremely valuable - Glacius remnant, never melts)
- Character: Methodical scholars, alchemy/cold magic specialists, warm but emotionally distant
- Succession: City chose candidate, Bhail hasn't presented his yet
Veridia (Grymaw / Nature)
Veridia is the sovereign dragonkin enclave nestled within the ancient Barkgrove forest on Lake Orthera, surrounded by Heartwood elven territory yet maintaining absolute independence. Predating the southern expansion of Heartwood by ages, Veridia once sheltered the elves during their darkest wars - a debt the Heartwood acknowledge as "forever spiritual." The city blends Heartwood guided-growth architecture with Veridian magical stoneshaping, illuminated by bioluminescent plants and creating an aesthetic unique in Scalea. Despite their location in elven forests, the Veridians take a more pragmatic approach than their Heartwood neighbors - they fell trees and restore them with accelerated growth, exploit and replant, harvest and rebalance. They serve as the spiritual capital of healing magic and surpass even the elves in destructive nature magic.
- City Protector: Verdan the Green (356)
- Location: Barkgrove Forest, Lake Orthera, inside Hellach territory (sovereign enclave)
- Population: 80% dragonkin, 10% Heartwood, 5% dwarf, 5% other
- Economy: Forest goods, healing services, river tariffs (controls Orthera river to Bay of Penance)
- Character: Pragmatic scholarly naturalists, spiritual capital of healing magic
- Architecture: Hybrid Heartwood guided growth + Veridian shaped stone/roots + bioluminescence
- Key Relations: Heartwood in "forever spiritual debt" (Veridia helped during wars)
- Note: Healer Network (cross-racial Red Cross equivalent) founded here
Swaerie (Felbane / Poison)
Swaerie commands authority from atop a hill amid the Black Marshes, the only Scale City embedded within the human-dominated Western Peninsula. The marshes themselves are inhospitable wasteland that no human nation wants to claim, making Swaerie's neutral position both strategically secure and strategically critical. The city stays remarkably clean despite its surroundings, though its canals carry hazardous marsh waters that punish careless boots. Swaerie specializes in alchemy and herbal remedies rather than pure poison-craft, drawing components from the alchemical goldmine that is the surrounding marsh. The dragonkin here host human peace summits when tensions flare, monitor the Western Ridge situation, and otherwise let the smaller human conflicts resolve themselves while remaining ready to mediate the larger ones.
- City Protector: Venna of the Marsh (491, "Venna The Vague" - passive, neutral, unpredictable)
- Location: Black Marshes, western peninsula between marshes and Western Ridges
- Population: ~90% dragonkin, 5% human, 5% other (mostly Corvec scholars)
- Economy: Alchemical components (Black Marshes goldmine), natural remedies, herb-based solutions
- Character: Scholarly, alchemy specialists, clean city despite surroundings, dangerous canals
- Role: Hosts human tension summits (dragonkin-initiated), monitors Western Ridge, stays neutral
- Mithra Stance: Neutral (hasn't backed candidate)
Chronomere (Temporus / Time)
Chronomere occupies a cliff plateau on a peninsula extending from the southwestern Southern Plains, suspended in a spherical bubble of dilated time. Within the city, a year passes as a year - but two years pass in the outside world. Birds entering visibly slow in mid-air; people walking through the Timekeeper's Gate transition from normal time to half-speed. Most residents are Temporus dragonkin who experience their natural lifespan inside but outlive the outside world by twice. The proxy district of Gnomon, slightly larger than Chronomere itself, exists outside the bubble and handles all major trade and re-adjustment services for the time-jetlagged. A barren ten-meter buffer called The Equator separates the two cities, where children are forbidden from playing. A literal Centauros Songwell shrine inside Chronomere serves as their pilgrimage site, while seasonal Centauros migrations swell Gnomon during dust storm seasons on the Plains.
- City Protector: Aeon the Shifting (578, travels frequently via dragongates)
- Location: Peninsula on Southern Plains border, SW coast
- Time Dilation: 1:2 ratio (1 year inside = 2 years outside), spherical bubble, time crystal beneath
- Access: Timekeeper's Gate
- Time Jet-Lag: Non-dragonkin experience severe adjustment (sleep problems, reality warping)
- Character: "Depth over breadth," two sunrises/sunsets per day inside
- Special: Centauros Songwell shrine (pilgrimage site)
Twin Cities
| City | Population | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Chronomere | 30k | Inside bubble, cliff plateau over sea |
| Gnomon | 35k | Proxy city, normal time, actual trade hub |
Buffer: The Equator (10m barren zone, children forbidden, effects strengthen near wall)
Anima (Mnemoria / Mind)
Anima sprawls across a remote island off the coast of Farholm, an impossible city where buildings levitate, doors open at the touch of a thought, and stones move aside in response to spoken commands. The Mnemoria dragonkin who founded the city possess no true psychic powers but exceptional intuition - they sense emotions, read intentions, and follow their mind's perceptions rather than analyzing them. Anima embraces the full spectrum of mental magic, including the dark side that other cities lock behind sealed doors. Healing houses operate alongside Eternal Preservation houses where the souls of the willing are transferred into time crystals for eternity - a practice human religions despise but Anima offers freely. The city accepts that good and bad coexist, that knowledge encompasses light and shadow alike.
- City Protector: Mentis of the Mind (503, near end of lifespan, mentoring successor)
- Successor: Edriel the Prismatic (180, unanimously chosen, true prismatic heritage)
- Location: Remote island off Farholm coast
- Population: 50k island, 35k in Anima city, 70% dragonkin
- Architecture: Impossible/surreal (levitating buildings, thought-activated doors)
- Economy: Eternal Preservation services (soul transferred to time crystals), dark magic scholarship
- Character: Pragmatic, intuition-focused, emotion-readers (not psychic, just exceptional intuition)
- Philosophy: Good and bad coexist - healing houses AND eternal preservation houses
- Dark Magic: Openly studied, more accessible than Mithra's locked vaults
- Mithra Stance: Mentis publicly backs Cipher BUT plans to pass throne to Edriel before vote (Mentis Gambit)
- Edriel's Likely Vote: Harmonia (creates 2-2-2 tie, Venna kingmaker)
Current Vote Breakdown
| Candidate | Votes |

| Cipher | 2 certain (Bhail, Aeon) + Mentis publicly |
| Ignis | 1 (Pyrrus) |
| Harmonia | 1 (Verdan) + likely Edriel if Mentis passes throne |
