The Beastmen

The Beastmen of Scalea comprise two distinct mountain peoples - the goat-folk Ibexi and the avian Corvec - whose settlements interweave throughout the world's mountain ranges and who are bound together by an ancient covenant of mutual aid and shared defense.

Ibexi (The Herd)

The Ibexi are mountain-dwelling goat-folk scattered across hundreds of settlements throughout the world's mountain ranges, with their cultural capital at Tumbler Peak on Mt. Traix in the Central Ridges. Collectivist to their core, they identify as part of "The Herd" - a philosophy that emphasizes mutual aid, community over self, and the recognition that all peoples of Scalea form one Great Herd. Their settlements largely self-govern, with the Honorable Alpha (currently Orrum The Unshakeable, seven-time winner of the bi-annual Trial of Strength) serving as a unifying figurehead with limited actual authority. The current crisis revolves around Orrum's attempts at centralization, which most settlements simply ignore as violations of local custom.

Corvec (The Winded Feathers)

Their entire civilization has reorganized around this loss - from the "Winged Past" they now call themselves "Winded Feathers." The Storm Spires on Barbridge Island (three hundred miles north of Eastwatch) serve as their capital and scholarly center, where their famous Weather Wardens predict storms and unusual atmospheric patterns. Their unique air-pressure-sensing throat organ lets them navigate complex aerial terrain despite their limitations. They reproduce through eggs incubated in heated chambers rather than bodies, eliminating gender from childrearing entirely. The Great Warden Augur Quoc'rryn represents the Corvec at official meetings, though their settlements operate independently with the city-by-city customs.

The Pact of Peak and Wing was forged some five thousand years ago when Corvec flight began to deteriorate seriously. The terms were simple: Corvec weather magic, wind knowledge, and aerial scouting in exchange for Ibexi mountain pathfinding, vertical terrain expertise, and rescue capabilities. The Winter of Endless Storms - a three-year catastrophe that saw Corvec weather predictions and Ibexi shelter knowledge save countless lives from both peoples - cemented the bond. Modern Corvec and Ibexi settlements interweave throughout the mountains of Scalea, but neither rules the other. The Storm Spires and Tumbler Peak remain culturally exclusive to their respective peoples by mutual agreement.
